The Herald-Sun posted this article about the drop in koala population. Excerpts follow. Note that koalas live in the Kenmore Bypass corridor and would be badly affected. Please urge Anna Bligh to take this into account and find an alternative to the destructive Bypass.
…It is believed there are less than 20,000 koalas now in the wild in southeast Queensland…The surveys reveal that since 2001, koala numbers have dropped by 45 per cent in Pine Rivers….
…[Sustainability and Climate Change Minister Andrew McNamara said] the Government’s current koala plan was not working and the koala population was on the edge of an irreversible decline…

Long live the Kenmore Koalas – along with their friends at Lone Pine and the Koala Hospital at Moggill.
Stop destroying their habitat!
No tree, no me the Koalas say!

For those of you interested in our environemnt an intersting sight that we can all have a look at is the huge nest in the top of the massive Gum Tree on Kenmore rd at the T Junction of Gem rd.
Located in the nest is a visiting storm bird or channel-billed cuckoo Scythrops novahollandiae from Indonesia & New Guinea for the summer. This bird has thrown out the crows eggs & laid it’s own in there for the crows to raise. Very cheeky!!
It is the largest parasitic bird in Australia and although not rare or threatened it is part of our beautiful environment and it contributes to it’s biodiversity of our area Across the day it flies over our home and cruises and swoops down over our valley looking for food in the preserved corridor
You can view the Channel-billed cuckoo and listen to it’s call on the EPA website.

It’s hardly surprising that the koala population has decreased so quickly and significantly, given the level of urbanization and growth in South East Queensland.
What is most disappointing is that all levels of Government ploughs on saying they want to help and do very little about it. Just the odd advert on T.V. to make them feel better about their role in preserving I mean destroying the environment.
Having a little relax this afternoon and T.V. advert came on saying ‘Your city, your say’ balancing growth, greenspace and congestion. It’s just ridiculous the residents of Kenmore have no say in the Kenmore Bypass, no effective representation by local & state government. All they want to do is rip out the greenspace, threaten our homes and people, many species of flora and fauna. It’s just a joke.
Our federal rep has gone missing in action, got a nice Xmas email from him yesterday but that doesn’t help Kenmore. I am starting to think none of them have heard of climate change nor do they know the meaning of the word extinction.

Seems like there are not too many people even looking at the blog let alone making a comment – I have written to the Westside News suggesting a bridge in Belbowrie. The State Government’s last advice is there is no plan, no funding and no money so instead of waiting around until the hammer falls why aren’t you people fighting for our rights to prevent this unnecessary disaster to our local environment? The old saying if you don’t ackowledge it – it will go away – that will not work. We have collectively put a lot of time and effort in fighting this proposed bypass so why has everyone stopped voicing their opinions? I just don’t understand.

Victoria,
I think with construction having begun on Legacy Way, it’s too late. The Bypass was brought back to life as part of a Western Gateway Duplication consisting of Airport Link, Legacy Way and the Moggill Pocket Arterial. It’s a truck route directly from the Warrego and Cunningham Highways to the Port Of Brisbane. Two of the three are currently under construction, so do you think that an LNP government, run by the person responsible for the plan and the vulnerable represented by the LNP member who sold his electorate out will even blink at bulldozing this through? No, of course not.
