Thanks to the Brisbane Times for this article. Here are highlights or see it all here.
Eighty-five homes would be resumed and a local koala population wiped out by a $500 million Kenmore Bypass plan preferred by the State Government…
…the bypass gave time savings of a maximum of only six minutes for local residents using the road…
The plan does not feature a bikeway… Gem Road at Kenmore would no longer be a through road…

If indeed this is part one of the connection to the Warrego Highway, they have offered Main Roads the best option.
I am very disappointed that there is no bikeway featured here. I also find it interesting that the only mention of public transport is that the KB “*could* provide opportunities for public transport improvements on Moggill Road”. In five years when this road is at capacity, and the Centenary highway is backed up to Springfield we will say “thanks for nothing”. You really have to wonder whether anyone in the government is committed to long-term solutions to traffic.
Without political support in opposition to the Kenmore Bypass our community will be sacrificed for short-term gains.
Jake
The whole public transport & active transport carrot is a sham. Promising these things for the Kenmore bypass sorry Bi-section of Kenmore, oh yes & then cutting it out to save costs.
This mentality only serves to highlight that this government is only interested in building roads & tunnels for big business & self centred people that would never in a millions years be seen dead on a bus or train. Even if there was a stop outside their house
Most of these people won’t believe climate change is happening until they see such evidence, like water lapping at their front doors in Upper Brookfield because all the ice has melted in the world.
Our so called modern society has become so selfish, all the people starving in the world, the homeless. Even here in Brisbane the economic times are creating real stress for people. Pensioners who have worked & still are working all their lives are struggling to make ends meet.
I think it is obscene that the government are spending millions & millions of our dollars on roads & studies to put them in. When cheaper, quicker & faster options such as the bridge at Moggill to Wacol exist and are right underneath our noses.
What is wrong with our current government and our local member of parliament in Moggill. They all seem all so far removed from the reality that the Kenmore Bypass is a waste of money. It will destroy Kenmore’s beauty, condem all those that live here to excessive noise & pollution. Kill off the koala population, tusk frog that has the same threatened status. Remove habitat used by many other animals & birds. The bus route will be cut here and we will lose our public transport.
Exactly what for? The price is too high to this community, you just can’t measure these things with money. They are not replacable and yet our local member thinks this is perfectly acceptable. WELL IT IS NOT.
I am furious with them all. What is going to happen to our children & their children, what are we teaching them? What is point of conservation if they are never going to care. So far the only rational voice to this debate is comming from the Greens. Every one else is so far behind it’s like they are stuck back in the Victorian times.
Time for some common sense to prevail & take the blinkers of & accept that we just can’t ruin & pillage the earth, just because we think we can. It is not our right. Please think about this Anna, Lawrence & Bruce.

I just wanted to let you know I am preparing a summary of the CRG meeting number 3 on Monday night and analysis of what this stage 2 means. I am so absolutely disillusioned by the process to date that I need a few days to consider my options.
We have a meeting booked in for Sunday 16th Nov from 2pm at KSSS Hall to discuss the Main Roads options that they have released this week.
Marie
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the Main Roads intend the Kenmore Bypass as Stage 1 of the connection to the Warrego Highway. All you need to do is check out the long term maps and join up the dots. It may not happen in the next couple of years, but if Main Roads gets its way with pushing a four-lane, 80km hour highway through Pinjarra Hills, Kenmore and Fig Tree Pocket, it will make it so much easier to connect up with the Warrego Highway.
I just don’t understand why residents who will be impacted in neighbouring suburbs are not clammering to support the NO KENMORE BYPASS campaign. If they do not assist in stopping Stage 1 which is the Kenmore Bypass road, then they have no one but themselves to blame when the highway has traffic and trucks from the Warrego Highway thundering past their doors.
I am sickened by the lack of support from our existing local members (Dr Flegg and Cr De Wit) and equally upset that no other politicians other than the Greens Ronan Lee and Member for Mt Ommaney Julie Attwood will front up at a meeting to hear concerns or share their views.
It is vital we have very large attendance at the meeting on Sunday 16 Nov at 2pm, Kenmore State Primary School Hall. Please bring your neighbours, friends and anyone else you can contact

Haven’t been the best lately, just caught up with a lot of the posts. I agree with Jake, Marie 100%. It’s been my mantra all along - that is, it just does not compute why all of this side of Brisbane isn’t up in arms about even more long haul trucks being deliberately funnelled into inner suburbia. We’ve somehow got to get the message across re the full extent of what a lot of people must STILL think is ‘just’ a local 3.2k local road.
And Penny, hang in there - we need you!!!
Marie
Kathy (2) and everyone else. While discussion is important and sharing ideas essential, I think what we need now is a whole lot more people and a whole lot of action -THIS MONTH and NEXT. It’s not going to be easy with the holidays coming up but we must work at letting more people know the FACTS.
I believe we need to be:
- More visible
- More assertive
- More united
I believe we need:
- Many more people
- To explain the facts in simple, easily understood terms because it seems a whole lot of people don’t grasp the gravity of the situation yet
- To advertise (costs money)
- To raise money quickly (takes effort)
- To produce clear maps that show where this project and Stage 2 in heading - (takes money and effort)
Someone out there must have a clever way of spreading the message wider because it seems there are a whole lot of people who just don’t know the situation or care.
And you’re right Kathy(2)when you wrote…..
Penny, hang in there - we need you!!!
However, more importantly, Penny NEEDS US (and plenty of us) as she cannot be expected to continue this important campaign without much more support, ideas and people power.
Come one everyone - together we can do this!
David
It’s really important that everyone who is available for the next SOK meeting , Next Sunday 16 November 2.00pm attend. There are many more things that people can do to help, I would encourage everyone to come along.
Being visible is important so that other residents know this is a big deal, we may not get this time again to show how much we care about our suburbs and everything in it. It is really crucial that everyone keep there signs up at their homes this is what the TV programs continually focus on. It’s a visual reminder that this problem has not gone away.
I think alot of people are alot more aware of the koala population is at risk. However Flegg & Bligh still feel they are representing the greater good of the community. But are they representing the greater good of the koalas in the Pullenvale ward & Moggill electorate? NO!!
If you had been on the walk last Sunday you would of heard Ric Nattrass naturalist & author of the Kenmore Koala Study that “there will be great damage done to the koalas in Kenmore but the real longer term damage will be done downstream, it has a flow on effect” I believe it is really important that all residents of Moggill Pocket know that all our koalas in the western suburbs will become extinct because we couldn’t get our local polititians & state representatives to listen to these dire warnings about the koalas. The only mentality they have is to build roads & tunnels instead of using more modern ways of thinking of solving our transport problems.
Rail, public transport(buses) and active transport cost less, have a smaller CO2 effect, smaller footprint on the earth, save time & cost less. Are healthier for us. Save a multitude of flora & fauna unique to this area including Koalas. WHY WOULDN’T YOU USE THESE OPTIONS?
I beleive SOK have come such a long way but it’s because of the dedication of many passionate residents who love their homes & community. The only reason we are being attacked by Bruce Flegg is because he knows know other way of behaving. Polititians make a career out of doing this to any type opposition. The main problem with this is we are his constituents he should be representing us not declaring war on us.
DR Flegg you can be committed to this road until the cows come home but know one in Moggill Pocket from Fig Tree Pocket to Moggill is going to thank you when the koalas are all DEAD. Premier Bligh knows this & that is why she has started the koala take force. For me her credibility is on the line she has the ability to save our koalas I hope she does it soon, before it’s too late.
Just incase any one doubts there are koalas in or around the preserved corridor after Ric’s talk & walk you can view it on You tube.

Department of Transport Code of Practice for Management of Traffic Noise link: http://www.mainroads.qld.gov.au/web/partnersCR.nsf/DOCINDEX/Road+Traffic+Noise+Management+-+Code+of+Practice. Some Interesting Reading in here.
Also a table giving information on relative noise levls: http://www.eltoroairport.org/issues/noise_levels.htm.
I am also wondering how the MRD would be able to manage noise to within the 60dBA Penny wrote of in her minutes of the consultative committee minutes. With the route mostly being in a natural amphitheatre the sound should travel well. I would be very interested in finding out if the MRD could manage propogation as they say they would.
Would be handy if more informationn on the noise management plan were released. I saw a map of the effected area previously, but would love to know what levels of noise would be across the land profile.
Mark
In responmse to Robert’s comments regarding the noise factor and the natural amphitheatre in the corridor I would suggest we arrange for a vehicle with loud speakers to travel along the proposed bypass with the traffic noise recordings made earlier this year of the Centenary Highway & Western Freeway in areas with and without noise protection. This surely would be a huge wake up call for all the residents afftected and those beyond - so many people fail to realise just how far traffic noise travels.
Steve
I’m with you on that one Mark. The noise will be horrendous, for the residents it is one of the greatest concerns. We are just not used to the noise the loudest thing around here is the birdsong & the occassional late party. While we are atit we could go for a drive through Bellbowrie past M DeWit’s house and B. Flegg’s home in Brookfield and give them a taste of what they are serving up to us.
Robert
Seriously guys, I did a bit of research on Sunday and found an article (Australian in origin) describing the percent loss of value in a residential property per dBA increase in noise. From memory it was about 0.5% per dBA increase on average, (I will see if I can find the article again and post it); however if the character of an area is lost it can be much larger (tens of percent). This means real money e.g. many tens of thousands of dollars that our properties lose in vaule because of this road. Imagine if you lose 10% on $500k, $50k loss, $800k gives a $80k loss.
Another thing is that if the MRD cannot control the noise we will be stuck with it, the best we could hope for is financial recompense but this is all very conditional.
This is a big deal. My house would be worth less than what I paid for it. Not happy about it. Want to see proof that it will be sorted by the design up front early.
