Got this from a faithful subscriber:

There is a ‘Sustainable Suburbs’ meeting on tonight and Margaret de Wit’s office confirmed Margaret is attending.  Wed 30 July, 7.30pm, Uniting Church Kenmore, Moggill Rd.

I don’t know anything about this group – I only read the flyer but here’s what it said:

The combined factors of peak oil and Climate change are precipitating unavoidable change to our lives.

If we start now, we have the opportunity to define our new living conditions and create the Pathways and Processes that work for us. Be pro-active, not re-active!

Come, join with others and be a part of this opportunity to explore local solutions to: food supply, transport, health, technology, leisure and creativity, community support.

We are delighted to have Councillor Margaret de Wit join this resident discussion.

I’m going to try and make it there, would be a good opp to talk to Cr de Wit about her support of the KB…

This meeting was organised by a few neighbours of Holdway Street, Kenmore. They sat around the kitchen table talking about climate change, peak oil and the challenges ahead for the world, Australia and our community locally. Rather than expecting our leaders to drive a solution, they decided they could do something now to affect the changes we need. They organised the meeting hoping others may be interested in change. They did a very good presentation, talking about what other communities around the world are doing, and asked the people present what we wanted to do. Two hours passed quickly with a lot of practical ideas. The success of the water strategy in Brisbane and changing behaviour was compared to how carbon reduction could be tackled. The aim would be to be carbon neutral. School traffic, public transport access and organisation, location of services to reduce travel, affordable ‘green’ solutions, alternative accessible energy… were some ideas. There were people there from – Kenmore (70), Bellbowrie (2), Pullenvale (2), Kenmore Hills (1), Brookfield (1), Indooroopilly (1) based on a show of hands. I was proud to see so many of our members present. The people present accepted that if things are to change, we can start in our homes, our streets and lobbying for the things we need. We agreed we would want to meet again, form a ‘group’, and have guest speakers/ movies on matters relating to sustainable living and reducing our carbon emissions. While this group has not formed due to the Kenmore Bypass, the synergies in our views are clear. It gave me heart that people are thinking about the environment our children will have to live in and planning proactively for the future. The group showed strong support for a community garden and Margaret de Wit is taking community suggestions for its location. I suggest you give her your suggested location via email – pullenvale.ward@ecn.net.au
The next meeting will be Wed 27th August at 7.30pm at the Kenmore Uniting Church Hall.

I think Sally-Anne Atkinson Park where you had the community picnic in May would be perfect. Corner of Sunset and Twilight Street. It has water and play equipment and a rotunda. It has rich aluvial soil – perfect for a garden.

Chissie

Yes and Sally-Anne Atkinson Park has plenty of sunshine to help grow a garden with vegetables & fruit for a sustainable future. The local community can see what is going on there and get involved drawing our neighbours & community together.
Showing our children & grand children what to do & learning how to get along & make friendships. What a fantastic idea I LOVE IT !!
I will be going to the next meeting & also bringing friends, family & neighbours. Thankyou for this information

Angus

Margaret will never let it be there. IT is too close to the corridor and she doesn’t like Sally-Anne or the people who live in Kenmore South now either. She will put it where she wants it – you wait and see.

Hi there,

I’m a fig tree pocket resident interested in starting or joining a green group, wanting to change things so people can and will live more sustainably

Things have been quite for a while. I urge everyone to pay attention to other development issues around you. For example, there is a plan afoot to turn the Karana Downs golf course into a housing estate. If this goes ahead, there will be still more pressure to build a new road. I have a little information on that on my web site, and there is an active community group chasing that issue (see e.g. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=126862953698). Even if you don’t live in Karana Downs, you are entitled to object once the DA is up for public comment.

Vaughn, look into the transition towns movement e.g. http://transitionkenmoredistrict.blogspot.com/

I think its time all of us who are against the bypass should email the government and main roads and ask them to make a final decision so we who are all affected by the paypass can know what is going on get on with our lives instead of having this black cloud hanging over our heads. There are people who want to sell and others who want to stay so we all need to know if this project is going to happen or is it going to be cancelled completely forever (no putting it in the “to do ” basket for another 35 years) I urge everyone to make their voices heard and I also think our notices regarding no kenmore bypass should be resurected in full and shown to all and sundry so people in this community can band together and fight this pathetic idea and make our feelings noticed – we have been too quiet for too long. Put up your signs and let those who are dictating our lives know we are over it – we want a decision one way or another. And it must be a final decison.

Matthew

Hear hear! How do we organize this? We want to stay here and do some reno, and want to get this over with. Will we get a bypass, so we reno the front and inside, or will there be no bypass and we reno the back porch? Really, let’s get an answer. How can it be done?

Happy New Year!!! – As I went to Ipswich via the Moggill Ferry yesterday (Saturday) seeing the catepillar tractors gobble up more earth to create more houses in this area I cannot see a grand plan from BCC who is allowing these developers to snatch and smash land to create more housing which will force the increased traffic to go through Kenmore onto Moggill Road. There are 3 levels of govt. local, state and federal and all are in this together – they need to spell out exactly what they mean and impart this information to the community. If you doubt what I am saying check out the Moggill Markets next fortnight and look at the infrastructure going on on the left -

i saw an interview with the mayor of ipswich on tv a few months back.

he said something like this: “Sydney has Parramatta, then the Blue Mountains, Brisbane will have Ipswich, then Toowoomba”. I infer that he means he is encouraging urban sprawl all the way to Toowoomba?

NB these comments are just my recollections and are not from a transcript.

Why are politicians so obsessed with growth and development?

Paul

Does anybody know what the latest info is on the proposed bypass? All has been quiet on the government front since early last year. Are there any announcements that I have missed?

Two announcements seemlingly unconnected No1 a development in Logan equivalent to the size of Springfield
No 2 the abondament of the promise of Rudd to can the Goodna bypass.

No 2 is the reservation of the decision of the ex liberals i.e. Howard to build the Goodna Bypass

Now I hear on t.v. that the Rudd Govt has now back lipped on its promise to stop the Goodna Bypass

The Goodna Bypass has 2 bridges to cover the Brisbane City River

That proposal was protected by a covenent that there would be no exits or entrances onto that part of the Goodna Bypass that crossed the river

Now that covenents are being broken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What plans do they really have?????

Main Roads maintain they have a preserved corridor for a little bit of Kenmore i.e from Moggil Road to Centenary Highway.

However, they still have lines on the maps ubd referdex etc. that shows two lines continue from Moggil Road intersection with the “proposed” Kenmore Bypass out through Pullenvale and all the way out to the Warrigo Highway,

FLEGG opposes stage two of the Kenmore Bypass to the Warrigo Highway through his back yard –

Margaret de Wit is also is also in favour of the Kenmore Bypass
It probably will go past her property

The MRD has a Grand Plan for the whole of the whole of Brisbane

The Kenmore Bypass is just stage one of many stages that they will not disclose until it suits them to diminish the values of all adjoining properties along its grand plan.

The Grand Plan needs to be ivestigated under f.o.i to the full for the whole of Brisbane, Logan Ipswich etc. and give a projeced timetable of when these proposals will take place.

Highly concerned for you your neighbours and your investments.

Mark
