Bruce Flegg’s biased mail-in survey has an online counterpart. Please have your say. I hope you register your opposition.
(Added 29 April 2008: I have added a page analysing this survey, showing you just what Bruce Flegg sent. Also, unprompted, I have corrected Dr. Flegg’s title, with my apologies.)

Does ANYONE genuinely believe the government will spend hundreds of millions of dollars and devastate thousands of people’s lives on a 3.2 km ‘bypass’ to ease the traffic
problems of a relatively minor part of the population. While the ‘bypass’ is nightmare enough for us living close to it, blind Freddie can see the road will be extended and become a duplicated Ipswich motorway with, in my opinion, the very real prospect of north-travelling long-haul trucks and two-bin gravel trucks using it night and day. There has to be better ways of easing Moggill Road congestion than tearing apart suburbs between the Warrego and Centenary Highways.
The 3.2 km stretch is referred to as the Kenmore ‘Bypass’ – aren’t the thousands of people living along the proposed road corridor considered to be residents of Kenmore – the road is NOT ‘bypassing’ Kenmore.

Main Roads says that there are no plans for stage 2: just like there were no plans for the Kenmore Bypass. The main argument for this road is that Main Roads owns the land. They own the land to the Warrego Highway too. If this goies through a four lane freeway taking Kholo Creek gravel is sure to split Moggill, Bellbowrie, Pullenvale and Kenmore. Nothing is more certain.

This is such a shortsighted and unworkable project without thought to the environment

Kathy I couldn’t have put it better myself, and what IS that with Flegg supporting the Kenmore Bypass (and yeah what part is bypassing Kenmore?), and yet opposing Stage 2, he must BE Blind Freddie if he thinks that Stage 1 will go ahead and not Stage 2.
Kathy
Sheryn, I can’t help myself I just put another comment re Mr Flegg…unfortunately I voted for him, wanted Mr Springborg in, but sometimes just sit here shaking my head at his choice of words. (And I hope this is what a blog is for – sharing thoughts etc, I’m new to it).

How can the member for Moggill support a freeway through Brisbane’s residential western suburbs? If he claims not to support Stage 2 how can he support Stage 1?
There seem to be 2 different issues here..a western bypass for Brisbane (relieving Ipswich Road); and the local traffic congestion on Moggill road.
While no-one in Brisbane’s western residential suburbs would want to see an alternative western link spilling more traffic onto an already stressed Western Freeway and “rat running” through Brisbane to the Ports and North; most would agree there is a need to reduce the traffic flow through Kenmore shopping precinct, but there are better alternatives than the proposed road. A bridge to the already existing 4 lane Sumners Road with a dedicated transport route(train or bus) linking the Moggill/Bellbowrie area to Darra railway station is a superior alternative. It would provide a badly needed public transport corridor for local commuters giving them access to Brisbane and Ipswich and the developing Springfield area.
Roads for commuters in cars are not a solution for relieving congestion, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in our cities. We are being told we need to adjust to a world with less oil and higher fuel prices. More convenient and cost effective public transport is required. Unfortunately, the convenient and cost effective public transport has to be provided before the demand increases…so planners who just respond to current demand are always playing “catch up”. The politician who shows leadership and vision with respect to public transport will get my vote at the next election.

Unfortunately Jodie, Mr Flegg has blinkers on when it comes to the bypass. Probably close to retirement and doesn’t intend living in the area after he wrecks it.
Silly me was half expecting him to send out an urgent newsletter expressing concern for homeowners here who’ve received resumption warning letters. Perhaps I’d better not hold my breath waiting.
I was joking but said to someone the other day it’d be great if we could secede from this electorate and have a member who will fight for us!! Or at least not accuse us of deception when we put the facts out there. But it’s no joking matter – despite there being much better alternatives to the bypass, I’m starting to fear we have no-one “in power” on our side, that maybe it’s a done-deal and the community input process is a farce. SO hope I’m proved wrong.

I think that’s selling him short. It’s not the greatest solution for all, but i very much doubt he’s selling us all for 40 pieces of gold. The man deserves more respect than that.

163 families
With all due respect. 163 families just got letters saying their properties may be resumed if the Kenmore Bypass goes ahead and Flegg hasn’t even acknowledged them in ANY WAY! Further why hasn’t he written to the 3000 adults and children who will live with the noise and pollution. He is bleeting on about some desktop thing Main Roads investigated. He and they should rather be investigating the real alternatives people in this community have been begging for for over 30 YEARS! Shame on him. I don’t care what motivates him, but do care he is neglecting all these families.

I have to say I agree. Regardless of whether Mr Flegg agrees with the Warrego Highway extension to the Centenary Highway or not.
Ultimately if the Kenmore Bypass happens the horse has bolted. The damage is effectively done and it’s only a matter of time until the Warrego Highway is on our doorsteps. I think he has been a bit naive on this point. This is a very present and legitimate concern, regardless of the letter he wrote regarding the highway extension. Best not give it the opportunity to happen in the first place.
Generally speaking on the issues at hand; I believe he has been insensitive and uncaring to say the least, not withstanding the people in the firing line are his constituents.
I think the displacement of 163 families and the massive impact that this calamatous project (that is stage 1 and 2) will have on the lives of the thousands of people left behind warrants a heck of a lot more then we have seen to date. I am positively underwhelmed.
I wonder how he would feel under the circumstances; not happy I bet.
I would like to see him come out and start addressing the legitimate concerns of the people he is supposed to represent and whose best interests he is supposed to represent.
Heaven knows, if he removes his blinkers and actually considers the effects on the people and the alternatives to the project, he may even find cause to change his position on the situation. Up until now I have seen nothing of the sort.

Bruce Flegg says that the residents of Moggill & Bellbowrie are entitled to use the Western Freeway – so they are and so they do ….
BUT it is the residents of Ipswich and the Darling Downs who would turn the Western Freeway into a slow carpark. If the proposed Karalee – Pullenvale road were to be built
from the Warrego Highway, linking on to the proposed Kenmore By-Pass – what would there be through Kenmore ?
Another Ipswich arterial road.
Kathy
To deserve respect you have to earn it and Mr Flegg hasn’t done that with the residents affected by the bypass. Not only has he accused the group of false information and scare tactics for simply making sure everyone was aware of the Warrego issue, but he hasn’t shown any concern re the families here who have been officially advised they face potential resumption. He was quick to put out an urgent newsletter re the Moggill Road ‘secret study’, and as our elected representative he should have IMMEDIATELY shown the same concern for this area.
As for retirement – I stand by my comment. We’re all entitled to retire where we want, when we want but now he’s encouraged the bypass process, I’d be interested to know if he plans on staying to see it through to the very final stages (if it goes ahead).
Kathy
We must have hit submit exact same time Robert – you beat me to it by ‘that much’. I would have worded mine slightly differently if I’d seen yours first. You put things much better than I do but I’ve been thinking the same thing. ‘Underwhelmed’ is a good word to describe the lack of comment about the bypass in the paper. I’ve seen nothing in the Courier about the resumptions?? Interesting to see what’s in this week’s Westside News.
Jacob
One unpopular solution shouldn’t do away with the respect a man in his position deserves. The accusation that he will up and run is baseless and inflammatory. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very much for an exploration of other options, an explanation to the affected families and everything else, but there is no need to fan what is already a smouldering situation. I honestly believe that a calm, discussion based on facts and options will get us further than calling the man a judas.
Kathy(2)
‘Inflaming’ the situation was totally unintentional on my part but forgive me if I don’t feel too bad as I think my comment is small bikkies compared to Mr Flegg accusing the group of false information and scare tactics.
Having said that, I apologise to the group if I’ve caused offence and also for taking the discussion away from what matters – that is, why is Mr Flegg showing no concern for those severely affected by the bypass? Perhaps he will remedy that seeming lack of concern in this week’s Westside News.

Respect comes more from what a man does than merely the position he holds.
